Event Description

MAHATMA
Universal theatre presents a new stage drama

LEAD KINDLY LIGHT/ LEAD THOU ME ON

A riot began to Noakhali in the year of 1946. It was a political issue to destroy communal harmony. The unity of Indian subcontinent. All the connections were disconnected by a attack styled as military. Road, Culvert & post office were destroyed. They set fired village after village by spreading petrol. Happened devastation loot, killing, kidnapping & tourcharing women. When this means reached to Mahatma Gandhi, he became tens and He started for Noakhali. He was sick and only two volunteers with him. When he reached here he felt a heating fire of communalism. Gandhi started searching for light from the dark fundamental cruelty. he was overcome his journey? Who was gainer?

Universal Theater to present a drama on the chapter from that unforgettable history of Mahatma Gandhi. This is more relevant and necessary in today’s atmosphere where hatred, disharmony, violence and intolerance are spreading at an alarming rate and moral values are on a decline. In the present age of unrest it is important to understand and practice his principles for a progressive world.

Mahatma Gandhi is great world leader who has strived and sacrificed his life to showcase the power of non-violence, peace and unity.

Background and ambience
In those days situation in Bengal was particularly complex. In the province, Muslims represented the majority of the population (54%, as against 44% of Hindus) and were mostly concentrated in the Eastern part. As a result of this demographic structure and specific developments, this province was the only one in which a Muslim League government was in power under the provincial autonomy scheme introduced in 1935 in coalition with the Europeans, and against the hurdle of strong opposition from the Congress and also from a Hindu nationalist party, the Hindu Mahasabha. The latter was supported by many members of the rich Marwari trading community, composed of immigrants from Rajasthan, who largely dominated the economy of Calcutta and of Bengal (although European capital was still important).
Against such backdrop, an unprecedented riot occurred in mid August 1946 in the provincial capital Calcutta on the Direct Action Day and detoriated the communal harmony of Bengal to all time lowest level.
