Hello, I am a gandhian scholor & have deep knoledge in gandhian philosphy. I am working in Gandhi Research Foundation. I am editor of bio monthaly magzine ' Khoj Gandhi Ki.' I want friendship with you for the piece of the word.
The above link will take you to a website made by me showing the statues of Mahatma Gandhi at places outside India. USA has about 14 such statues in different cities.
Since you seem to be examining food issues I would say that If the world accepted one precept of Vegetarianism advocated by Gandhi all the economic and evnironmental woes of the world would get solved.
How ? One may ask. Well the meat Industry of the world consumes huge amount of petroleum (transporting insecticides to feed farms, transporting feed to animal farms, transporting animals to slaughter houses, transporting meat of slaughtered animals to supermarkets/shops) contributing to 20% of green house gases. If every one goes vegetarian this petroleum is saved. Petrol prices would crash. Air travel would become cheap. People would travel across borders. Populations would get more mixed up in next 50 years or so and so wars would become less likely and global warming would reduce due to less green house gases. Moreover cancer cases would come down by half as various surveys have revealed that the risk of cancer is less prevalent in vegetarian communities.Land released from animal feed production would be used for food grains. (It takes 25 pounds of food grains to produce one pound of meat) Problem of hunger and malnutrition would be reduced. Not to mention that the supply of potable water for human consumption would increase as 2500 liters of water goes into the production of one Kg of meat.
Thus as Gandhi gave one point programme of spinning khadi for India The one point programme for solving the economic/health/environment problems of the world can be solved by one point program of going vegetarian.
Hey , That's nice to know about your project, Gandhiji have courage and guts to stand for justice more than this it all was with non-violence.
I am young social worker from India establishing a model community based college called " Mahatma Gandhi College of Social Work " in West Champran from where Gandhiji started first ever movement called Indigo movement against British govts. you may visit at http://ucpsarnet.iglooprojects.org/dreamrainbow , I will be happy to collabrate with you , your college or students who would like to involve for this unique kind of project which is based on Gandhiji's social equity and inclusion principles . You may reach me on mobile +91-9910711112 or skype id is birsoni. All the best.
Hope you are vegetarian. Gandhiji was strict vegetarian. Human being has choice - you can depend for your food on plants or animals or both. You have to choose. Tiger does not have such choice. If it kills deer, would it be considered violence? I think - No. This is the order of the nature. It does not go against that order. A human being eats non-vegetarian diet by choice and hence, he decides to do violance for the sake of taste. Do you agree with me? Today, non-vegetarian food is very popular. How can we rest in peace when we kill animals for food? let me know your views.
I want to visit your house will send me an invitation card?

India Redefined www.indiaredefined-a4c.org the movement which I started last year& got award for ,'The Best Humanitarian Initiative of the Year
has started three different projects- "I Care", " Educate India", "Develop Your Village".Join & be with me in Redefining India.
India Redefined draws its inspiration from Gandhian Movement which was a revolution focused on independence. It was also about specific actions like non- cooperation by citizens. We are just trying to apply many Gandhiji's principles’ in this era, in this society and during these times. Maybe in a different flavor! Maybe the context is different! Maybe it’s a different world! But the goal is same! He also wanted India a better place to live in.
Thousands of people have joined this movement across the globe but we have only 37 Chapter co-ordinators till now to take on the responsibility, by rotation in different cities of India. It is voluntary work. If you want to suggest anyone's names for Chapter coordinator, then please send me a mail regarding this at ranjanakanti@indiaredefined-a4c.org

Hi Whitney, Amita Baviskar, a specialist on the question you're researching - Gandhian thought, food sovereignty - will be delivering an Ahimsa Day Lecture on 30th January at the Indraprastha College for Women, Delhi University: "Good to Eat: Gandhi and the Ethics of Food". Other speakers are Purushottam Agrawal (a specialist on Kabir and Gandhi) and Dilip Simeon ('Gandhi's Final Fast'). I'll soon announce the precise time slot on Gandhitopia. We'll record the whole session on video and post it up, like "A Future for Ahimsa" (Jan 30th, 2009).
I'm delighted to see this at UF. Both of my children graduated from there..one in Environmental Engineering; the other from the University Law School. Are you in the Social Sciences Dept? Go Gators!

Dear Miss Whitney,
Iam pursuing my Ph.D on "Gandhi and His Management Philosophies with special reference to Trusteeship". I would be happy if you could help and guide me on this topic.
Dear Whitney,
I find that through swadeshi and his experiments with Control of the Palate, Gandhi left alot of ideas on food sovereignty. In his last years at Sevagram community, he was eating lime juice on Gur or jaggery, as a substitute for fresh fruit, which was very hard to come by there.
I am interested to know what your research has found in this regard.
Best wishes,

A neighbor of mine recently visited a ghandian base community in La Plata missuori, called possibility alliance. They leave off of the grid and use bikes for transportation. Antonio
I would like to hear more about "food sovereignty".
I am working with groups in Kenya to help with hunger. Currently women are brewing and drinking a local fermented brew called "jangaa" which numbs the pain of starvation.
