When the World has been silently and heplessly witnessing the war in North-Africa and Middle-East versus US, NATO and their Alliance over the issue of Terrorism and the defence of so called democretic System of the Western Developed nations, I got a chance to meet with a holy Monk from Shri Lanka, in Milan, Italy. It was the initiative of Ayurveda-devotee and a friend Sarah Marder. It was a very kind gesture that though he has to leave for Colambo tomorrow morning, Rev. Gunaratna was very kind to give his preciouse time to meet us and discuss the current global situation and the solution provided by Gautam the Buddha.

Rev. Gunaratna, a blindman, with his Sthitpragya-face, appears to be a person of deep thinking, calm-smiley eyes, full of inner-confidence and overall lively-personality. With the help of two persons, an artist Tilak Jaysooriya and another young Monke Dhammshriji, we initiated our dailauge. Sarah helped us in translating from English to Italian and Rev. Dhammsriji from his broken English into Sinhalese. Rev. Gunatatna spoke only Sinhalese.

My first question was, " How do you view the overall global senario, Swamiji?" Rev. Gunaratna gave a rosey-smile and started telling an intersting story of a thristy dog who went to a pond to quench his thrist. As soon as the dog approached the pond he saw his reflection in the water, seeing the face of a dog in water, the dog became very angry and forget his thirst and furiously pounched upon his own reflection till he became deadly tired. Who will tell the dog that there is no other dog, it is merely his own shadow and preception of his own mind? "

Smilingly, Swamiji continued, "it is the real picture of the world. The 'modus operandi' for the development of Mind is always available in this world. However, the development of Wisdom (Panna) is to be had only with the advent of Samma Sambuddha(Positive Wisdom). It is regrettable to note that at present we only encounter procedures for mental development and no satisfactory explaination of procedures for the development of Wisdom."

This is exectly why Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1935, suggested Indian National Congress not to go for Westminster System of Parliamentry Democracy. Most of the people think about the development of mind and not development of Wisdom, no body listened to the sane suggestion of Gandhi. The result is before us all.

Rev. Gunaratna has delevered a series of talks in February 2010 in Sydney, Australia. These talks have been published in English. The title of the book is, "THE VISION OF DHAMMA :THROUGH PENETRATIVE INSIGHT".

All inquaries regarding this small but precious book may be addressed to Mrs. Manel Perera, Hony. Secretary, Siri Sadharmaloka Kalyana Mithra Sansadaya 83/3, Buthgamuwa Road, Kalapaluwawa, Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka.

I feel very fortunate to have been able to bring two great teachers together and to have been able to listen to their conversation, almost like eavesdropping on a private conversation between two men who have both achieved a very deep understanding of the nature of life. Although I could not understand everything that Ven. Pitigala Gunaratanan Thero said, I had previously read his book and so it was very clear to me that he and Dr. Arya's views are strikingly similar.  It was very beautiful and instructive for me to see two highly evolved people who have reached similar "places" and conclusions by walking on two slightly different paths.  It seems to me a living example of what Swami Vivekandanda called "charitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal."  That goal, I believe, could be summarized as unity rather than division, peace rather than strife. In other words, non-violent solutions....
