LIVE LIFE VEDIC WAY

Sixteen Sansakars are prescribed for an embodied soul of a human being professing Vedic Dharm. The story of a human life begins with the Garbhadhan Sanskar when a sperm fertilises an egg and life process begins in the mother’s womb. Indeed right from there the education of the unborn fetus begins and goes on in a continuous process until the Antim Sanskar. Indeed the imprint of karmas of previous life on the soul of the unborn baby is also in the reckoning for shaping its personality. The thought process of parents make an impression on the soul of the baby in the womb and the story of Veer Abhimanyu learning the intricacies of a Chakravuah yudh bear testimony to it. The modern science of genetics supports it.
EDUCATION PRE-NATAL POST NATAL
Right from the word Go, the education process commences as mentioned heretofore. The education of the new arrival in the family is handled by both the parents and an Acharya who make a team wherein the three complement each other. Maharishi Swami Dayanand Saraswati has beautifully dealt with the subject in the second and third chapters of his magnum opus, the Satyarth Prakash. He quotes the Shatpath Brahman, a Vedic treatise on the Yajur Ved :
MATRIMAN PITRAMAN ACHARYAVAN PURUSHO VED
A person becomes knowledge personified when a team comprising mother, father and Guru take care of the personality development of an individual right from the beginning. How true it is!
The great socio-religious reformer of the 19th century India, Dayanand Saraswati, has spelt out what to teach, when to teach and where to teach. He has emphasized the importance of disabusing minds of men and women in the impressionable period of their lives of superstitious beliefs and imparting Vedic education in the form of mantras, Ved bhashya, Darshan shastras and grammar in the lead book, Panini’s Ashtadhyayi.
Of great importance is the process of exorcising the Evil so that a cleansed mind is receptive to the Noble ideas. It is after the Duritani Parasuv that a man’s mind is receptive to Bhadram Aasuv. Simply speaking it says; Banish the Evil and Imbibe the Noble.
No wonder the Ascetic Educationist wants to keep stories of Bhoots, Pretas etc at bay. When a person is dead and the soul is gone, he or she is of the Past or Bhootkal. A dead Guru is a Preta and his disciples who carry the body for cremation are Pretahars. There is no reason why a living person should be scared of the ones dead and gone. If the right type of education is not imparted FEAR sets in and stunts growth of an individual’s personality. The Vedic system of education makes an individual ABHAY or fearless and lets a well rounded personality be groomed and shaped to find its way in the present day world.
Mehar Chand Mahajan, an eminent leader of the Arya Samaj and the DAV College movement was a victim of a superstitious belief where a Jyotishi makes a Janma Patra and predicts a baby’s future. Young Mehar Chand was wrongly declared to be a bad omen for the rest of the family and exiled to another village to live life as a shepherd and a cowherd. However, there was another twist and turn in the family’s destiny when elder brother of young Mehar Chand expired at a young age. Perforce Mehar Chand was brought back to live in the outhouse and later dispatched to Lahore to keep his shadow away from the family. Mehar studied Law, came in touch with the Arya Samaj and that helped blow away superstitious beliefs in Janma Patra that Swami Dayanand calls a Shok Patra in his treatise, Satyarth Prakash.
Once banished from his parental home Mehar Chand Mahajan rose to be the Chief Justice of India and played a leading role in reorganizing Arya Samaj Anarkali in the post-partition era. But for the enlightenment caused by the Satyarth Prakash, the results would have been disastrous for all concerned.
TEN PRINCIPLES OF ARYA SAMAJ
The history recalls that with the founding of the Arya Samaj in 1875 in Bombay , now Mumbai, 28 rules were formulated for guidance of Aryas who enrolled as members of the Arya Samaj. Later in 1877 at Lahore in the presence of Swami Dayanand Saraswati the Niyam and Upniyam were chiseled and handed down to us generation after generation as Ten Principles of the Arya Samaj. The great organization has inborn democracy where all Aryas are free to express their views for betterment of the human society in general. Allow me to mention that Swami Dayanand Saraswati was offered by members of the new organization, 100 in all, to be glorified as the Life President of the Arya Samaj. The democrat in the Swami declined the offer and encouraged members to elect their own President.
It is the ingrained democratic system that keeps the Aryan organization going unlike the Brahmo Samaj, the Prarthana Samaj and many more of the ilk that rose and fell sans any impact on the social order. The Ten Principles of the Arya Samaj lay an emphasis on the Enlightenment of the Human beings in general and frown upon fragmentation. The Mahant system of other religious outfits must never be allowed to take roots in the Arya Samaj because ill effects of such a system will shake the very foundation of the great edifice that survives on the teaching and propagation of the Vedas where all are equals.
Avidya ka nash aur Vidya ki vridh karni chahiye – this principle, or a commandment as some call it, must be followed both in letter and spirit. It will keep superstitions at sea and let Vedic concepts take roots in new and unknown domain. That indeed will be a tribute to our founder of the Arya Samaj. The DAV movement will indeed render yeoman’s service by propagating and publishing Vedic literature in both Hindi and English, beside regional and foreign languages, to carry the message of the Vedas as interpreted and enunciated by Maharishi Swami Dayanand Saraswati.
WOMEN IN ARYA SAMAJ
The Vedic view is: Men and women are equals. There is no post, no aasan, no organization where an Arya Samaj woman member cannot head or guide. In acquiring knowledge or propagating the Vedic concept or performing the duties of an Acharya or a Purohit, be it a wedding or Vivah Sanskar or an Antim Sanskar, men and women are equally eligible.
Going back to the days of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, a student of history will find that darkness had overshadowed light. STRI SHUDRO NADHITAMIT SHRUTEH, so said many an Ignoramus in shastrarth to the great Vedic reformer, Dayanand Saraswati. The unflustered Rishivar told his detractors to show the said sentence in the Vedas. They failed to show as it did not exist. Now it was the turn of our Maharishi to counterattack with arrows of his Vedic knowledge and quote Ved Vakya verbatim to prove the equality of men and women in choosing life partners.
BRHMACHAYEN KANYA YUANAM BINDATE PATIM
On completion of education in the Brhamacharya Ashram, a girl on attaining womanhood chooses her husband – so says this mantra from Atharvaved. The mantra proves the point that women had the same right to receive Vedic education as men had and the girls had the prerogative to select their life partners of their own free will. What more proof does one need to convince one and all about equal rights being enjoyed by both men and women in life and letters.
Indeed it will be in the fitness of things to let this Vedic system of social order not only continue but also be buttressed.
In the Chinese language this Vedic concept has been elucidated further. Frankly speaking, the Chinese social order has all along been male dominated. In thousands of years of the Chinese history, there was only one Empress who ruled a large country like China and the rest were all emperors. However, the thought process is slowly undergoing a change in our neighbouring country across the Himalayas. In an International Women’s Conference held in Beijing, an old saying was revived. It said that women were half of the heaven and, therefore, important enough to be listened to and their advice heeded. PAN TIAN- half of the sky comprises the fair sex. Ignoring them will be done at our own peril. I must however, confess that in my not infrequent visits to our giant neighbor, I found that it will indeed take some time before the concept of Pan Tian is put into practice in day to day life.
Be that as it may, our Indian young minds must understand once for all that superstitious beliefs must be given a decent funeral and Vedic concepts must be put into practice in our daily life. Let the Vedas prevail over misconceptions generation after generation. Indeed it will make our social order worth emulating by other countries situated far and wide and Bharat may attain the position of a VISHWA GURU.
