I

I am in the US, at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, attending an International Institute on Kingian Nonviolence. I came here to learn about Martin Luther King Jr's strategy of social change through Nonviolence. Here on the internet I saw a horrifying news from my country, in Bihar State, Police brutally beating a village youth to death in the most barbaric way. I am sitting here more than ten thousand kilometers away. This News give me a shock which is unbearable. I wrote immediately to my good friend and Editor of World Focus Bhbani  Dikshit in New Delhi and express my deep sorrow over the barbaric incident in a remote village of Bihar where my one-time friend Sh. Nitish Kumar is the Chief Minister (CM). Nitish and myself worked together in Total Revolution Movement at the call of Late Sh. Jaiaprakash Narayan, back in the year 1974.

Who is to be blamed for this barbaric incident is not the main question, the key question here is that it has happened in the State of Bihar where Sh. Nitish Kumar is the C.M., who had tirelessly worked for Total Revolution in his young-days in the year 1974-79.

My simple question to my friend Nitishji is : Have you forgotten JP? Have you lost sight of the call for Total Revolution that JP had given? And we all worked day and night and faced the Jails and other various barbaric treatment of the State? Have you forgotten the message of Total Revolution, that was to change the System and not the Person and the Party?

I worked as a grassroots worker for the movement for total revolution. In the end I got frustrated. But I did not leave the way I have learned from Mahatma Gandhi and Vinobaji and that is why I am at Rhode Island.

I shared this brutal News on the internet, along with with live pictures, with the Director of Nonviolence & Peace Studies, Professor Paul Bueno de Mesquita, and I told him that it is because of the so called Democracy of which Gandhi was not at all in favor. In the year 1935 he told All India Congress Committee, the organization that has been fighting for Freedom from the British.

I say that this System is based on "Dry Mathematics and not Living Sociology".  Gandhiji used  the term that instead of Democracy 'Swaraj' is better. But nobody in the Congress supported him and he resigned from the Membership of the Congress.

Why I say the System Dry Mathematics because it is based on Numbers and not on Heart and Mind. It is not only with my country India but wherever this System has been functioning in the World over. The increasing social violence is mainly due to this System. This Inhuman System has to be changed. We have to bring heart and mind into it, that is what the late Martin Luther King Jr. was always talking of building a human being with a "tough mind and tender heart". In the present day Democracy there is no mind and there is no tender heart.

Yes, I woleheartedly agree with your points of views. Our system has shifted from traditional Panchang type of calculations to a Numerological one in the recent past. But, either of them failed to cater to the needs of the common man when it comes to justice and development. While traditional system had a few ingredients of human side like character, Guna, Heart, mind etc., it was lacking the newer approaches to modern day issues. Numerical system, on the other hand, has wholly left behind the human facets.

We need a fully revurbished approach to build a human matching the system we follow. Nitishji might have been appropriate in the past, but with the current days' turbulence in politics and social issues, he had to remain silence with no action.

I am looking for Gandhiji's Swaraj with "Think Global, Act Local" kind of model to nullify the drawbacks in democracy.

I liked your views and appriciate that you are keen about Gandhi's views. His life history itself is Geeta for me. His experiments with truth is in itself a base of consitution. I have done a painting 43x4.5 fits on canvas showing 111 events. I have shown and narrated the story to many schools and children they  could know about Gandhi's life. Here leaders are not interested in Gandhi, except on 2nd October and 30th Jan. Interestingly I have been invited to Australia to exhibit and narrate the story. In Sweden in few schools have adopted Gandhi as model person.Unfortunately we are beating our senior citizens, children and women in midnight.

I am unable to understand the Govt. decision.
