I am considering undertaking a fast - to death if necessary - here in the USA, to get our Govt. to "Quit Politics" when it comes to making sure that everyone and especially the poor have access to quality health care that is fully subsidized. it will take alot of courage and effort, and we will need alot of media to make it's message clear. I would even travel to Washington D.C. to let our two houses of Congress see how desperately the people here need medical care coverage. Anyone have any thoughts?

THis was a very old post. Your points are well taken. But a fast is a personal decision. I didn't fast at that time, BTW.

Morgana, I appreciate your concern about health care and planetary health such as in the Gulf oil spill, but disagree in fasting to death for government action. There are two levels of 'democracy' (Greek = 'power of the people'.
1. 'Political' ('workings of the many') democracy is based in the periodic (2 - 5 years) voting system and represents only a small fraction of collective human power. The act of placing an 'X' on a ballot is collectively a small act. 'Economic' (Greek = 'care and nurture of the home and family') power lies in our actions and our spending every day. Everytime we spend money we are voting, everytime we work or act we are voting.
2. Economic Democracy, traditional to the Production Societies of the world's indigenous peoples organised a progressive ownership of the means of production within each specialty. Because indigenous peoples organised their economies around the longhouse and pueblo style of individual and family housing clustered into community groupings and interaction, they were able to account for and valorize domestic and community service such as we call women's labours. Valorizing both male and female labours brought wisdom from both sexes and peace.
Our present forms of government are founded upon a hidden layer or puppetry from economic masters such are corporations today who fill strategic government posts and buy elections and the public's imagination through their media control. Considering the lack of basic lack basic feedback from our domestic economies into the conscious economy it is important that people organize their own self-sufficiency, becoming the change we want to see in the world from the 'tree-roots'. Relational Economy is described at

I appreciate both your support, Amit and Arya. I am scared to death about this, but the thought crept into my head one night when I couldn't sleep, and over the next two days it formalized. After have discussion upon discussion with my husband about why the US Congress is arguing over what should be obvious, ir: health care for all its citizens and residents, people continue to become ill and even die due to lack of health care coverage. This has been going on for a very long time. I don't know how else to bring to their attention what for some people is a matter of life and death. AMIT: I agree with everything you say and yes, I am doing it to bring the issue to light at the Congressional level: that people are dying while they politic. I really appreciate the help and continued dialogue to make sure I do not undertake this out of wrong thinking. Keep talking!

Dear Morgana,

I must say that your endeavor to draw attention towards a fundamental necessity of a civilized human society is a great cause. There is no question or other opinion in regard to provide free health care to everyone. I appreciate your audacity to undertake fast unto death. But I’d like to convey my understanding of such fast. For me, it is a last step in styagraha. A Satyagahi must undertake some actions before this, i.e. awareness (among affected people, potential sympathizers, and government officials as well) about the issue, communication/dialogue, effort to understand ‘the other view’, some symbolic protest actions, non-cooperation, fast for self purification, etc.
However, I hope you are doing such efforts to bring the issue in light.
Feel free to ask anything I can do for the cause. Keep us informing about the activities and steps forward.
