One thing that is in my mind and heart greatly these days, is the duty of each person to undertake their own independent investigation of Truth. This Gandhi did, bravely, before the sightless scrutiny of the world, which only sees the surface of things.
I take great moral courage from the fearlessness that he exhibited. If we look in his writings, we find that it was in 1909, when he was sailing back from UK to South Africa, after having written Hind Swaraj, that he found himself coming to…

When Mother Teresa touched my hand
Kathmandu, Nepal, — "Kamala! We must make able ourselves to survive for peace, for God," Mother Teresa repeated in our first meeting. This statement makes me think about the real definition of life. Whatever it may be, I learned a lot about life due to our meeting. I got a chance to think about life. I must thank her for this. One should firmly determine about one's life. Unless we are independent, we can't accept life in meaningful way. It is true…

My meeting with Parijat
Kathmandu, Nepal, — The popular Nepali woman writer Bishnu Kumari Waiba, known as Parijat, died in 1993. When I met Parijat, I was a 12 years old. Parijat created a sense of love, a sense of relationship and a sense of humanism. She loved her poems very much, and could tolerate any pain.
Parijat told me seriously, “Kamala, sometimes I get pain in my heart. So I write.” I couldn’t keep from smiling. These words made me smile. Her soft voice could be…

My following article was published in National Herald a daily founded by Jawaharlal Nehru (now defunct). I am submitting it on the occasion of the 3rd International Dialogue On Economics Of Non-Violence being held in Jaipur on 13th and 14th November, 2008. However I would like to add a post-script to it in the context of the global financial meltdown which is reminiscent of theGreat Depression of 1930s. The world leaders of Group-20 are meeting in Washington to find a solution to the… Continue

There has been much heart searching recently among Gandhians and responsible industrial circles over the true import of the idea of trusteeship as conceived by Gandhiji and its relevance to the present situation. A ritual obeisance was paid recently to the venerated Gandhian ideal at a conference of leaders and representatives of industry at Wardha under the benign presence of Acharya Vinoba Bhave. Another colloquium on trusteeship is in the offing.
All this is done evidently…

I think it would be most appropriate to recall the great Ahmedabad trial at this juncture when the centennial of the Gandhian satyagraha in South Africa is being commemorated worldwide. When Mahatma Gandhi entered the Central Hall of the Government Circuit House at Ahmedabad on the 18th of March, 1922 to face a trial on a charge of sedition under section 124A of the Indian Penal Code about two hundred spectators inside the improvised… Continue

Published in “The Times Of India”, dt. 2nd Feb,1969
It is strange to assert as Mr. Balraj Madhok does (January 26) that the word Hindu “has never been used in the sense of a religion in the vast range of Indian literature.” To argue thus is to speak of Hamlet without the Prince of Denmark. In doing so Mr. Madhok, indeed, exaggerates by denuding the word Hindu of any religious connotations. One may presume that by the word religion Mr. Madhok means dharma meaning…
