Hello, I am a gandhian scholor & have deep knoledge in gandhian philosphy. I am working in Gandhi Research Foundation. I am editor of bio monthaly magzine ' Khoj Gandhi Ki.' I want friendship with you for the piece of the word
For many of us including me, Mahatma Gandhi not winning Nobel Peace Prize is sad and emotional. Nobel Committee may be not honest by denying the Peace Prize to Gandhi. MK Gandhi has become bigger than Nobel Peace Prize. Hardly anyone remembers the Nobel Lauriate the year after they won it All the thoughtful Political leaders Ganhdi is his or her mentor. Peace doesn't defined by SALT1 SALT 2 etc. For me Peace more than just a political dialogue between evil empires and Super powers.
Peace is term depending of the context. In a family it is a harmony between family members, for the community getting along with your neighbors and neighboring community, for a student not to carry guns or sell drugs to their fellow students. For a nation Peace is more complicated, they have to defend their borders, do good to their citizens, do good to the environment and help the poor nations to be able to provide shelter, 2 meals a day, clean water to drink, reducing infant mortality, treat their sick etc to their people. We all can do more e to promote Peace doing community service. Peace itself healthy for person practicing it. It reduces the inner tension, hatred, and resulting better mental and physical condition. Peace is beautiful thing to unite the Nations around World. May the Year 2010 brings World Peace. Historical meaning of Peace defined "absence of war” to “equilibrium” to “a utopian state of spiritual and social harmony devoid of conflict.”
I hope, I end this end this discussion saying "Peace to you and your family"
Your detailed and informed response is welcome. Though call it a comlex issue, you have made it simple. Why Gandhi was not given the prize? But the bigger question is "What is PEACE?" For me SALT-1 or SALT-2 or SALT-nth, NPT et al are not leading to peace. These treaties, very useful though, are the results of power struggles and efforts to restrain the destructive power of opposing (or contracting) parties by mutual consent. So, Peace has always been a hostage held by violent powers.
Peace also does not mean salvation of an individual; spiritual something.
Nobel Committee played politics under the instruction of colonial powers and denied the prize the honour of being bestowed on a person like Mahatma Gandhi. The definition of peace is hijacked by Nobel committee. We should retrieve it for the benefit of the world. Can we not find one man in Norwegian parliament who would raise the issue? Small efforts on our part may go a long way.

Here Bjorn has posted two links exposing fraud called Nobel Peace Prize. This will give you a link to Nobel's Will too. Very interesting write-ups calling for some action..
