There is much merit to this point. I often urge people planning protests to refrain from describing the protest as peaceful. They should describe it as nonviolent so the authorities can't attack them AND make them liars at the same time.

- Hopefully I am wrong, but it appears I am the only advocate of Gandhian resistance in the US. Gandhi is, of course, much more than resistance. It seems all US scholars of Gandhi avoid resistance and none of those who do nonviolent arrest urge others who do so to avoid seeking mercy.
I've been arrested about 30 times and did 4 months in jail in 1982.

I too am confused because I did not find 'Reply to this' under the latest post by David Slesinger. I do not know how this would appear.
David, we belong to the same age group.
First thing, I realise the problem you face which is more in nature of ideological weaknesses on the part of the people around you. I mean, they do not believe, what they say. You have very rightly said that: " I have been urging American activists to see that the most important dimension is not theory or even evidence, but courage/cowardice.". I could not agree more. to tell you honestly, I happened to be agovernment employee till Nov. 08, I have had no opportunity to enagage in activism. I am an untried Gandhian. On the other hand you are doing something and willing to fight for what you think is correct.
I am happy that you have conceded my point that Laden is a culprit for other crimes even if he may not be responsible for 9/11. The main thing is, how to enlist people's support. Is there some sort of Right to Information Act whci may be used to extract information about actions government took before 9/11. I am just indulging in loud thinking. Is it possible to file a petition before a court to make government answerable?
See, my personal opinion does not count. it is your opinion that has to have priority for you. I can only discuss this with you.
It is surprising that your colleagues are not forthcoming in your support. But that is the way it is.
I would still say that creating consensus is very important. The evidence of government involvement must gather public support or must go to a court of law. That is courts should take cognizance of the evidence. I think you do work on this line too. This is more a matter of inquiry commission than of public agitation. at least, this is how I think.
