Profile Information

In regard to the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi I am a / we are an
scholar, activist
About me / us
Akshay Bakaya teaches Hindi at INALCO, Paris at the 'Formation continue' dept. - evening classes and Summer Intensive programs. Author of the Assimil Hindi course (for French-speakers), he is preparing the forthcoming Michel Thomas Hindi course with Hodder, London, publishers of 'Teach Yourself Hindi Conversation' etc. by Rupert Snell (now co-Director, Hindi-Urdu Flagship Program, Austin, Texas)

With his students of English at an international school in Paris, he proposed the day of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination be an International Day of Non-Violence. This initiative, relayed by Peace Nobel Shirin Ebadi at the Bombay WSF 2004, then supported by Noam Chomsky, Romila Thapar, K.R. Narayan, etc. finally led Sonia Gandhi and Desmond Tutu to take it up with the UN, which finally (June 15, 2007) adopted 2nd October (date of birth, not assassination) as UN International Day of Non-Violence.
My / our projects, events, campaigns, research, publications
To make the International Day of Non-Violence (Ahimsa Day) a day of imaginative world-wide experimentation and education for Ahimsa, a day as significant as Christmas, May Day, Valentines Day, etc. across the world.

A "Lamp Of Hope At The Doorstep" - 'Dehleez Pe Chiragh' - on 30th January evening

A new proposal calls upon people worldwide to express their faith in Non-Violence (Ahimsa or Adam-e-Tashaddud) with a simple act - lighting a lamp at their door or window on the evening of the Mahatma's assassination.

"The light has gone out of our lives, and there is darkness everywhere." said Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, in his evening address to the nation after Hindu fanatic Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi on the lawns of Birla House (now 'Gandhi Smriti Memorial'… Continue

India Redefined www.indiaredefined-a4c.org the movement which I started last year& got award for ,'The Best Humanitarian Initiative of the Year
has started three different projects- "I Care", " Educate India", "Develop Your Village".Join & be with me in Redefining India.

India Redefined draws its inspiration from Gandhian Movement which was a revolution focused on independence. It was also about specific actions like non- cooperation by citizens. We are just trying to apply many Gandhiji's principles’ in this era, in this society and during these times. Maybe in a different flavor! Maybe the context is different! Maybe it’s a different world! But the goal is same! He also wanted India a better place to live in.

Thousands of people have joined this movement across the globe but we have only 37 Chapter co-ordinators till now to take on the responsibility, by rotation in different cities of India. It is voluntary work. If you want to suggest anyone's names for Chapter coordinator, then please send me a mail regarding this at ranjanakanti@indiaredefined-a4c.org
