Lakhimpur (UP), Apr 11 (PTI) Veteran freedom fighter and staunch Gandhian Ram Autar Bajpai passed away at his Gola town residence, family members said here today. Bajpai complained of respiratory problem yesterday and was rushed to a hospital where he died. He was 93 and is survived by six children and four grandchildren. His last rituals was performed today.
Bajpai was a staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi. He joined the freedom struggle at a very young age. The British arrested him in 1939 when Bajpai was just 19 years and sentenced him to six months imprisonment with a fine of Rs 60. However, he refused to pay the fine and served two months' more imprisonment. He was continuously elected for 15 years as village head, block head and chairman of Madhiya cane cooperative committee.
