Noted historian Bal Ram Nanda dead

New Delhi, May 31 (PTI) Noted historian Bal Ram Nanda, the founder-director of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and the author of several books on Mahatma Gandhi, has died after a prolonged illness.
Nanda, a biographer of Mahatma Gandhi, Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Jawaharlal Nehru, passed away yesterday, an official of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) said.
He was cremated this afternoon, he said.
Nanda was the first Director of the NMML, a premier research institution, and remained at its helm for 17 years.
He was awarded the National Fellowship of the Indian Council of Social Science Research in 1979 and the Padma Bhushan in 1988.
Among the numerous books he wrote are 'Mahatma Gandhi, A biography', 'The Making of a Nation', 'Witness to Partition: A Memoir', 'Three Statesmen - Gokhale, Gandhi and Nehru', and 'Gandhi and his Critics'.
