Bihar to appoint new teachers for derelict 'Mahatma's schools'

The Bihar government has decided to appoint five teachers in each of the 391 buniyadi vidyalayas (basic schools) set up by Mahatma Gandhi [ Images ] in the state.

After decades of neglect -- during which the quality of education in these schools suffered due to lack of teachers and funds -- the Mahatma ke schools, as they are known, will finally witness a revival.

"The government has initiated some measures, including appointing teachers in all basic schools," said Education Department's Principal Secretary Amarjeet Sinha.

Sinha has ordered concerned officials to appoint teachers in basic schools.

According to officials, dozens of basic schools do not even have a single teacher, including the one at Brindaban in West Champaran, which was the first school set up by the Mahatma.

Mahatma Gandhi had launched his first satyagraha against British rule in Champaran district.
